As purveyors of colour, we know inspiration can come from unexpected sources. The colour palette for the Viennese family home of Philip and Kiri Sulke is personal, striking and best of all, comes with a good backstory. After discovering a unique apartment on the brink of being stripped of its historical detail, the Sulkes developed a plan with Laura Karasinski of Atelier Karasinski to not only save the apartment but inject their own history. While the building's heritage was painstakingly researched and restored wherever possible, a new layer of personality was layered into the home using inspiration from the Sulkes themselves. A painting of a grandfather, childhood bedrooms and even their favourite cocktail all influenced details in their new home.
"Our clients come from 2 continents that could not be further apart, but when they finally met in New York City some years ago, they both found out they share a favourite drink. Four Negronis later, they fell in love." Laura reflected. It was this reddy-orange apertif that became the muse for their kitchen. Alongside a beautifully restored wood panelled-ceiling is Bauwerk limewash paint in Paprika, deep red tiles, red marble, and a timeless haberdashery-style Devol kitchen. The result is a uniquely personal and bold space that is more vintage grocery store than kitchen.
When to go bold
Bauwerk's Paprika limewash paint is inspired by the bright terracotta walls used in Mexico. It’s a bright orange with a red undertone and, as you can see here, adds richness to a space. After years of neutral and light interiors trending, we’re predicting that bold colours are ready for a comeback. UK interiors magazine Living Etc. declared paprika the colour for 2023 because of its ‘welcoming warmth’.
Finding a place to use stronger colours comes down to function. In the Sulke apartment, there was an imaginary dividing line drafted between spaces for family activities versus serene areas to retreat. While the kitchen was deemed a colourful zone meant for life with their two young children, a very different limewash colour was selected for the ensuite bathroom. This private sanctuary is quiet and soothing with Kaolin limewash paint—a pale, moody, soft green-grey that satisfies a very different purpose.
From inspiration to selection
We talked with design director, Laura, about choosing Bauwerk limewash paint. "For each project, we always try to test 3-5 different shades of one colour direction and paint a small amount on a well-lit wall. We leave it up to a week and watch how it develops over time, in different light settings and with artificial light. It has helped us to select the perfect colour every time," Laura told us. She recommends anyone new to limewash to 'Get it, test it, fall in love with it as much as we did. It’s sustainable, breathable, flexible in use, and just beautiful. It enhances any space, gives depth to a plain wall and on top of everything functions as an air filter."
Atelier Karasinski is currently working on a new project in Vienna due to finish later this year and is currently testing Bauwerk Colours. We can't wait to see what inspiration strikes next time.
